Frugal Friday - Kids Swap and Shop

Most mamas know the ends and outs to getting our kids great clothes on the cheap, but how about for FREE?
This past fall, a friend of mine came up with an idea to have a kid's clothing swap as part of our Mission: Ignition (missional projects for our community with our church). We thought this would be a great way to serve our community, however, you could charge a small fee ($5 per bag) and donate the proceeds to charity.

What is a Swap and Shop?
A group of mamas that get together to exchange clothing and other kid items for free!

How to participate in a Swap and Shop:
If you're in Kansas City, you are in LUCK!  We have our Spring Swap and Shop happening this weekend!
1) Sort through your kids closets and toy boxes.  Gather all the outgrown clothing, shoes, coats, toys, books, bedding, and gear.
2) WASH IT, separate into sizes and seasons, and bag it up!
3) Bring it to the Spring/Summer Swap and Shop's donation table.
4) Grab a tote bag and start shopping.

How to host a Swap and Shop:
-Establish your rules-
You have to decide and clearly communicate if the items that are brought to the swap need to be considered play clothes or in consignment sale condition.  Indicate no stains, rips, or tears and to bring recently washed items or you will be doing a lot of sorting before the swap even gets started.

Decide how much mamas are allowed to take.  For a small group, it would be easy to count pieces.  For example, I brought 10 pieces of clothing, so I can take 10 pieces of clothing.  With a large group, it's easier to do bags.  For example, I donated 2 bags of clothes, I can fill two bags of clothes.  If you're hosting it for a community, this gets complicated.  Some people will come who might not have clothing good enough to swap out.  In this case, we've started out the day with each mama filling one bag for every 2 kids or so.  If we see they need more, we offer more.  If we have a ton of clothing that's not moving, we offer each family more bags as the day goes on.

The last rule determines what to bring.  Make sure you clearly communicate if the clothing being swapped is for a certain season or size.

-Establish your guest list-
Do you want a formal swap with 10-15 mamas or a community wide event?  Which ever way you go, you need to give people plenty of time to clean out closets, gather and clean clothing and prepare for the swap.  For a small group, you can send out formal invites or evites.  For a larger group, set up a facebook event or send out fliers.  These are easily passed onto friends of friends to create a larger group of mamas.

-Establish your date, time, & location-
For a larger group, Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon may be your best bet for a great turn out.  A smaller group might be easier to host on a evening during the week.  We typically try to rent out a larger space that's open to the community, but if you have a smaller group, you could swap right in your living room.

-Gather Donations-
Whether your group is large or small, you will have some friends who can't be there or just want their old stuff out of the house.  Offer to come pick up donations from them.  The easiest way to get the swap started is to have clothing to offer when it begins!  That way as donations come in, they can refill racks or tables.  If you have nothing out to begin with, people are going to be standing around waiting for more clothes to arrive.

-Gather Woman Power-
Especially, for larger swaps, you will need lots of help organizing, sorting, setting up and tearing down.  If you are offering childcare while mamas shop, you will need babysitters as well.  Get friends to help you with this process and offer an early shopper incentive to your volunteers.

-Pick a Charity-
You are bound to have items left over from the swap.  Pick a charity ahead of time so mamas that give donations know what will happen to their stuff when the swap is over.  If you are charging at the door to give proceeds to charity, make sure you communicate that to your guests as well.

Now, get out there and make this happen!  What a blessing it is to have nice clothing to share with others and leave some extra spending in your clothing budget for those musthave items at BabyGap.

Baby K'Tan

I am pretty new to the whole "wearing your baby" thing.  In fact, I never even bought a carrier until my 3rd child was born this past year, but I quickly became a fan of the Baby K'Tan.  Another baby wearer brought over 3 carriers to see which one would be best for me.  She brought me two slings and one structured carrier.  By far, of the three the Baby K'Tan was the most comfortable and versatile.  I have now been using my own Baby K'Tan for 5 months and have loved every minute of it.

PROS:
First of all, the fabric feels like heaven!  Both my daughters love to snuggle up close to me and fall asleep in the BK.  It's stretchy but still firm!  The unique design allows for over 8 different carry positions without excess wrapping, buckles, rings or snaps.  The BK can hold from 8-42lbs at one time.  And there is no need to worry about all that weight straining your back because the carrier rests on both your shoulders instead of one; keeping baby nice and secure.  The BK is made of two loops linked together by a smaller loop.  The larger loops hold the baby (or babies) and the smaller one allows for one handed adjustments to be made for the best possible fit.  The BK goes into the washing machine and straight into the dryer for easy, fast cleaning.  The best part of the Baby K'Tan for me was that it was so easy to nurse in.  My daughter nursed better in the BK than out of it!

CONS:
Sometimes the fabric is so stretchy that it seems loose.  The baby still fits very securely, but it feels like it has stretched.  This has happened a few times after wearing my 18 month old and then trying to wear my 6 month old.  I believe this could be a con of any organic cotton sling.  My easy fix has been washing and drying it.  Although, when I have forgotten to wash it, throwing it the dryer has helped a little, too.  My only other con is that I have found it impossible to put my daughter in the BK on my back without assistance.  This would be very helpful when I take a trip to the zoo and need to do frequent diaper changes.

Nothing in this life is perfect and even with the two small cons, the pros out weigh by far!  My Baby K'Tan is most definitely one of my favorite things!

Frugal Friday "Summer Movies"

"No good movie is too long and no bad movie is short enough." -Roger Ebert

It's almost summertime and that means we all become movie critiques for summer blockbusters!  Here are my frugal tips for catching some movies while saving some of that hard earned cash.

  • Drive Ins-
Kansas City has 3 drive in theatres that are up and running!  The Twin and I-70 drive in's are both owned by Globe Cinemas.   They cost $8/adult, $2/child 5-11 and 4 under are FREE!  You get to see 2 current movies for about the price of one at the theater.  We pack the SUV with pillows, sleeping bags and the mini dvd player for the kids and let them watch their own movies while we tune the car stereo to the fm station and watch the big screen!
The 3rd drive in location is called The Boulevard in Kansas City, KS.  I plan on making my first trip out there this summer.  They only have one screen and the prices are the same as the Globe Cinema drive in's.

  • Weeknight movies-
Everyone knows all the movies are only $5 during the week at most the theatres around town.  Check the local websites for free popcorn nights or coupons for cheap concessions!

  • Kids Summer Movies
AMC and Dickinson Theatres offer a kids summer movie program. AMC's website says theirs are $1 movies but they haven't given the list of theatres that will participate.  Dickinson plays the movie's for $2.50/person.  They show movies that were new to theatre during the past year as well as some favorites from prior years!  Landen is expecially excited for Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakuel! Check out the whole summer schedule!

  • Friday Night Flicks
Many organizations around town over free flick nights where you bring your blankets and snacks and watch a movie projected onto a large screen outdoors.  Our favorite location for these flicks is Crown Center.  I am totally excited to catch some of the older favorite movies like "Pretty in Pink" and "Groundhogs Day".  Here's the full schedule!

Hope you use these tips to spend this summer catching new blockbusters and spending family time introducing your kids to some old favorites! Stick your extra savings in the Summer Vacation Fund!

Frugal Friday "Gettin' Fit"

What's better than hanging out with your husband playing raquetball or taking the kiddos to the indoor pool when spring is here but it's still too cold to swim?!
How about getting to do these things as often as you'd like without breaking the bank!

Luke and I would love to be in better shape, but we have serious issues when it comes to setting time aside to work-out at home.  We want our kids to learn about a healthy lifestyle and not struggle with weight issues as we have.  So, 2010, we decided to get a gym membership.  These can be very pricey!  I remember my parents complaining a few years back about getting a gym membership, signing contracts and never even going.  Sounds like a waste of money- but there has to be a better way!

We found a community center near our house that is very affordable.  Our son loves going to Coco Key, but that's about $25/person for one day.  He has just as much fun at the community center pool that has slides, water sprayers and a lazy river and it's much cheaper!
Luke and I loved the idea of 24hour fitness.  We could go anytime and it's huge so we wouldn't have to worry about machines being filled up.  We talked about what times we would actually go to a gym and discovered Luke would go in the morning before work and I would go when the kids were in bed at night.  No need to pay for 24hour's convience at $29-45/person/month.

Legacy Park Community Center also offers a monthly (no-contract) flex-pay system.  We paid a one-time fee of $25/bank account and then $15/month for each of this.  When Landen shows more interest in going along, we'll get him one too.  For now, we pay $6/ visit and he goes 1-2 a month. If we buy a 30 visit pass, childcare for the girls is only $1.33/visit!  (these are the new rates effective April 1st, which are not on the website yet)

Plus, the money we spend on the gym can double as work-out time and recreational/family time.  Luke and I went to the gym a couple weeks ago and played raquetball for our frugal date night!
